Samsung Unpacked 1H 2020 - A World-First Livestream Experience With 55M+ Views

Vision

For its Unpacked 1H 2020 launch, Samsung and Cheil Worldwide, the brand’s executive marketing agency, wanted to showcase the photo and video capture capabilities of the new Galaxy S20 smartphone in a way that would engage millennials and highlight how the device can complement their busy lifestyles.

Creative perspective

We shifted the Samsung Unpacked livestream experience from one that utilized studio cameras to mobile devices to reflect millennials’ dynamic lifestyle.

In a world-first, the entire Unpacked event was captured with Galaxy S20 devices. The move represented a new era for the smartphone, highlighting it’s now possible for millennials—and all consumers—to have superior quality, broadcast grade software and hardware at their fingertips.

Many launch events showcase the features and benefits of new products, yet they don’t put these functionalities into practice on a such a large scale, and in real time. This bold approach enabled live and virtual audiences in their millions to experience the photo and video capture capabilities of the Galaxy S20 in both an immersive and practical way.

This was achieved by developing a custom hardware and integration solution where various camera rigs were adjusted to accommodate the Galaxy S20 devices securely. We also integrated the live video with switching and transmission equipment, which ensured that rather than being stored internally in the Galaxy S20 devices, footage was seamlessly broadcast in real time.

Results

The livestream secured 55M views and climbing. Commentary surrounding the livestream was positive, with tech websites such as SAM Mobile stating: “The video appeared extremely clear and bright for something that was streamed using just a smartphone. That’s incredible, isn’t it?”

Media reached 9.8K between February 11-12, with a potential reach of 18.8M, and social reach was 2.6M. John Jeon, Show Technical Director at Cheil said: “It is a great achievement of many people.”
