Derek's Story - Promotional Video for XLP, a youth charity in London
Contra have been huge fans of XLP for over 18 years now. We've worked alongside them on many campaigns and the latest film is an important message. We're facing a strange time in the City with crime on the rise and a real need to help young people find hope.
Right now, this week YOU have an opportunity to help. Any donations made to XLP right now are being match funded. This will make a massive difference! I asked Ben Palmer for a few words on why their work is so important and what WE CAN ALL DO to make a difference.
It’s been impossible to avoid the headlines about knife crime and gangs in the capital recently. It’s been even harder working in the communities where it is happening. It’s heart breaking when you know the victims and their families. But that is the situation we, at XLP, have deliberately put ourselves in. We’ve been working in communities in inner-city London for over two decades building long-term relationships and giving young people positive alternatives to gang culture and knife crime.
Right now, there is an incredible opportunity to give even more young people positive alternatives because any donations made to XLP by 12pm on 4th December will be doubled! If we hit our target, it will fund our Arts and X-Mobile work in an entire borough for a whole year. Our X-Mobile project uses two specifically designed mobile recording studios to visit 17 different estates each week and engage some of the hardest to reach older young people with the support they need to make wise life choices, work towards a positive futures and create great music at the same time! Our Arts project uses drama, dance and music to engage young people and equip them with a rounded set of life skills. It is designed to reward young people for positively expressing themselves and the issues they face. Rather than simply look for talent, we invest in young people who might otherwise be overlooked.
Our Arts project was a critical turning point in helping Derek overcome bullying, anxiousness & being threatened with a knife. We recently we created an incredible short film with Contra about Derek’s life. It’s really worth a watch if you want to see just one example of how XLP’s long-term relational approach changes young lives. The relationships he built with his mentor and the XLP team turned him into a young man who is flourishing. Derek has gone to university, is running his own business and giving back to his community through his own arts project!
We only have 6 days left to reach the target and get our donations doubled, will you help us turn the tide against knife crime? One relationship at a time.
