If you’re still undecided about which platform to focus on in 2022, this guide will assist you in making that decision. As a TikTok agency, we’ve compiled a list of the most important differences between these popular video applications to assist you in determining which one to prioritize to help your business stay relevant.

Instagram’s whole focus has shifted to short-form content, with Adam Mosseri, the company’s chief executive officer, publicly declaring that Instagram is really no longer an image-sharing platform but instead a video-sharing one.

Let’s begin by examining some of the similarities between these platforms:

  1. TikTok and Reels are the leading short-form video creation platforms, with each platform’s tools allowing you to edit videos. You can add sound effects, a voiceover or a musical track to go with the video. The audio component is far from an afterthought since the most popular videos on both platforms have risen to prominence partly due to the smart use of music

  2. They have a component for shopping: both platforms enable you to share things and provide a path for interested users to purchase them. To make this capability possible, TikTok interacts with Shopify, while Reels uses Instagram’s e-commerce features

  3. They offer a fun way to discover new videos: these short-form video platforms give a stream of videos, similar to how Facebook, Instagram and other online networks allow you to browse down a feed and locate fresh material. You simply scroll through, hoping to come across the next gem in the rough

Now, let’s look at some of the significant distinctions between TikTok and Reels. Depending on your company’s efforts, these elements may be positive or unfavorable. That’s why, before comparing the two platforms, you should have a solid understanding of your tactics and goals.

Here are some important considerations to think about:

Audience

Who are you trying to persuade? Because the networks have diverse populations, this is a fair question. TikTok, as you might guess, caters to a younger demographic. Statista estimates that nearly half of all platform users are under the age of 30, with 25% under the age of 20. Only 11% of the population is over the age of 50. Clearly, this is the cutting-edge platform for what the younger market values.

The user base of Reels, on the other hand, is more diverse. According to research, teenagers make up a relatively small segment of users, while nearly half of users are between the ages of 25 and 44. TikTok is unquestionably the best medium for connecting with generation Z. It provides a captive audience ideal for organic brand development. On the other hand, Reels is a great option if you’re targeting a more mature audience with higher spending power.

Music

The sound collection on TikTok isn’t restricted to chart music. Its users are continually making new sounds, which occasionally become part of new trends, and it has even given independent musicians early recognition. Gen Z frequently wants to ‘jump on’ to these fast-paced trends as rapidly as possible in order to increase their views and become one of the success stories credited with fame thanks to a viral TikTok recording.

Without a doubt, Reels offers a diverse range of audio selections, but it comes nowhere close to TikTok’s library. The majority of the audio on Reels comes from TikTok videos.

Video editing

Overall, TikTok has a larger selection of filters and effects, but Instagram’s filter library for stories is more limited. Although Instagram has the ability to extend its filter options, those that are now accessible on each platform are tailored to the types of material that each platform produces.

TikTok’s many effects allow for more creative and funny videos, whereas Reels’ restricted filters result in more visually pleasing, cleaner footage.

TikTok also provides duet, reaction and stitch tools that allow companies and users to communicate in more meaningful and creative ways than simply liking or commenting.

Overall, it’s safe to say that the future of entertainment is engaging moving image, and TikTok is the place to explore it right now. On the other hand, Reels is a good approach to add depth to your brand representation in short-video form if you’re seeking new ways to enhance your Instagram account.

Don’t be scared to broaden your horizons and make the most of both platforms. They can undoubtedly bounce ideas off of each other, which may be quite beneficial to your business or personal brand.
