Phone-hacking trial: Jury fails to reach a verdict on final charge

The phone-hacking trial ended suddenly today as the jury wrote a note to the judge that they had failed to reach a verdict on the final charge, conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office, against Andy Coulson and former News of the World royal editor Clive Goodman

The presiding judge, Mr Justice Saunders, thanked the jury for more than 43 hours of deliberations, and congratulated them for their "service to the country." He them released them from any obligation to serve on a jury again.

Lead prosecutor Andrew Edis QC told the court that a decision on a possible retrial would take place on Monday. Andy Coulson, and the other defendants who pleaded guilty, will be sentenced a a week on Friday (4 July).
