Maybe the story of Lottie (real name Rebekah) has leaked further than the readership of the Daily Record (local Scottish red top), I’m not sure but I can’t help myself, someone other than straight news has to talk about her.

Lottie for those of you that don’t know is 20, a student (ex, who is considering going back to complete her Economics Degree) from Dundee who was outed as a prostitute who sold her wares through Twitter. As you may have guessed I haven’t spoken to Lottie (or met her) but I am intrigued by her story. You may know that the most successful online applications are usually created by and for the online sex market, in my opinion Twitter has yet to be fully embraced, unless of course you consider the spammers whose tags / names usually end in numbers.

I really feel there is an opportunity for that market to better utilise this form of communication – and I don’t mean the social sites where people post video but specifically Twitter.

Lottie made in the region of £3,000 a week. It would suggest that the Dundee economy is in a pretty healthy state and that Twitter is being used by the well heeled in that part of the country – maybe it has something to do with the fact that Lottie went to a Sacred Heart Public School (fees £20k + a year) and she tapped into that market – whatever, it obviously worked.

There are loads of Twitter tools out there, that I and the agency I work for use, Seesmic, Tweetdeck, Tweetbeep hell we have even developed a Twitter tool ‘Tweetabits‘ it was developed initially for an accountancy practice and continues to gather pace – the point is though I just get the feeling more is to come from Twitter developers and users or have I yet to be introduced to the best that it can offer?

Straight retailers have benefitted, there has been quite a lot of mention about Dell for example, they have a direct correlation of $3 million in sales through Twitter alone. Amazon just yesterday announced a cut of sales to those that use Twitter to promote the product.

Thanks to Lottie it proves to the wider market that Twitter is an excellent marketing tool.
