A barbed wire notepad ad marks the anniversary of Auschwitz being liberated. Here’s why.

Every year on January 27, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust encourages us all not only to remember those who lost their lives but also to learn lessons from the horrific events.

This year, its campaign features a billboard that takes the design of a notepad where lessons can be recorded. If you look closely at the exercise book, instead of typical lines to write across, there are barbed wires – an image that has become synonymous with concentration camps.

Olivia Marks-Woldman, chief executive at Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, said: “We seek to learn from genocide to build a better future because genocide does not just happen – it is always the result of a steady process, which can begin if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented. There is still much to do to create a safer future, and Holocaust Memorial Day – as a warning from history and a recognition of the present – plays a part in that.”

Created by St Luke’s, the ad campaign will run in The Metro, key digital outdoor sites in London, Coventry, Hull and Liverpool.

Richard Denney, joint chief creative officer at St Luke’s added: “The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust works tirelessly to remind and educate us all on the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust and subsequent genocides around the world. We hope our work and support will shine a light on this important charity so we may learn more about the cost of genocide throughout the world.”
