WNBA ups its Twitter game to promote All-Star Weekend

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is taking to Twitter to promote its upcoming All-Star Weekend.

The brands are also trying to keep fans on the edge of their seats by teasing a new collaborative project, the details of which have yet to be revealed.

The WNBA All-Star Weekend starts tomorrow – All-Star Saturday – with the Skills Challenge and the 3-Point Contest. The All-Star Game will take place between Team Wilson (captained by A’ja Wilson) and Team Stewart (captained by Breanna Stewart).

The first new Twitter activation is a call-to-action (CTA) using the hashtag #MoreThanIncredible. In June, the WNBA tweeted a question to its fans around the world: “What’s your favorite memory of a [WNBA] player or team breaking a glass ceiling or doing something people said couldn’t be done?” The organization encouraged responses in any language and asked fans to “stay tuned.” (For what exactly, we can’t yet say.)

The WNBA will also be hosting a series of what it describes as “pre, during and post-game Twitter spaces.” Yesterday, it kicked these off with a “pre-game preview space” hosted by Arielle Chambers and Monica McNutt, both of whom are sports reporters, and Arike Ogunbowale of the Dallas Wings. This Sunday, the organization will host a “first-half watch party space,” followed by a “post-game recap/reaction space” on Monday.

The organization has also announced that Ogunbowale (Team Stewart) and Dearica Marie Hamby of the Las Vegas Aces (Team Wilson) “will be live-tweeting from their respective benches during the All-Star Game.” Ogunbowale also live-tweeted during last year’s All-Star Game – and managed to play a phenomenal first half.

The WNBA has been stepping up its Twitter game in recent years. According to a statement from Twitter, “usage of the hashtag #WNBATwitter was up 16x from 2020 to 2021.” The social media company also notes that roughly 676,000 people “tweeted about the WNBA for the very first time” in 2021.
