Instead of text, the novel – originally penned by author Sally Rooney – contains a QR code linked to the trailer for the show on BBC iPlayer. The books have been placed on the shelves of independent bookshops alongside usual copies of the book across 16 locations in Northern Ireland, where much of the BBC series was filmed.

The limited-edition book cover was created by Henn Kim, who illustrated the official book cover for Normal People. The cover features the four Conversations with Friends characters intertwined with one another to symbolize their complicated relationships, which is explored in the series.

The stunt was later amplified on social media to promote the series through image and video assets captioning the special edition of the novel, and bringing the creative campaign to audiences across the UK.

Ali Dickinson, BBC creative director, said: “By sneaking these books and QR codes into the very places in Northern Ireland where the show was filmed, we got local fans talking about how the best-selling book was now not just a book. It was such a treat getting to work with Henn Kim. These illustrations were exactly what we needed to get Normal People fans excited for the launch of Conversations with Friends.”
