ASA puts Charlotte Crosby on ‘name and shame’ list after Instagram ad failings
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has added Geordie Shore star Charlotte Crosby to its influencer ‘name and shame’ webpage after she failed to label ads on her Instagram.
The ASA has said Charlotte Crosby routinely failed to flag content on her Instagram account as ads / MTV / The Charlotte Show
Crosby joins fellow reality stars including Jodie Marsh, five Love Island contestants and Towie’s Lucy Mecklenburgh, who have already been added to the ASA’s non-disclosure webpage.
The ASA said Crosby had routinely failed to flag content on her Instagram account as ads and it would add her name to call out her lack of disclosure. Like the others, Crosby’s name will stay on the site for three months and will be routinely checked.
An ASA spokesperson said: “We prefer to work with influencers and brands to help them stick to the rules, but Charlotte Crosby has repeatedly failed to be upfront and clear when her social media posts are ads.
“It’s not difficult: be upfront and clear when posts and Stories are ads. If this doesn’t bring about the changes we expect, we won’t hesitate to consider further sanctions.”
After setting up the non-disclosure site in June the ASA has been proactively monitoring influencers. A recent sweep uncovered that through Instagram Stories, posts and Reels influencers are breaking the ASA ad rules 75% of the time.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is also taking action against rule-breaking influencers, having recently called for the power to fine influencers that fail to declare sponsorship.
