McDonald’s has drawn inspiration from a ‘fan truth’ anyone stuck in line waiting for service can relate to for its latest creative.

Fan favorite Grimace makes an appearance in this latest ad campaign

Premiering on YouTube, ‘Can I Get Uhhhhhhhhhhhh’ focuses on customers flummoxed by the menu options when poised to place an order, freezing when asked: “May I take your order?”

Developed by Wieden & Kennedy New York, the lighthearted piece captures the moment of fluctuation when patrons find themselves perched on the precipice between a Big Mac and a McChicken Sandwich.

The plaintive call of indecision has been adopted by social media as a meme for the difficulties in getting off the fence, and has been lent extra star power by celebrity supporters including Ye, 23XI Nascar driver Bubba Wallace and the world’s most popular Fifa Twitch streamer Edwin Castro.

They join a selection of everyday customers, as well as fan favorite McDonald’s character Grimace, who are shown rooted to the spot scrabbling to make a decision that could make or break their meal.

The 30-second spot concludes with one hungry customer taking the plunge with some Chicken McNuggets, only to be asked: “What sauce would you like?”

The campaign is complemented by a range of nationwide weekend events from skywriting in LA to billboards on Times Square.

McDonald’s embrace of cheeky campaigning has seen it author beer bottle-inspired billboards in Sweden to entice bleary-eyed drinkers to make McDonald’s their ‘first order after the last order.’
