Audiences are being offered the chance to experience classic films from yesteryear like they never have before courtesy of a discombobulating TV campaign by Turner Classic Movies (TCM).

Classic films confound expectations in dubbed TCM adverts

The US-based pay-TV network has culled iconic lines from The Wizard of Oz and When Harry Met Sally and transposed them on to disarmingly modern situations to show that classic film never goes out of fashion.

Born from its ’Where Then Meets Now’ mission statement, the time and space mash-up centers on two new spots directed by Ted Lasso’s Declan Lowney.

Cyclone opens with a children’s pillow fight before taking a surreal turn when the mother bursts in and begins reciting lines as the Wicked Witch of the West. Her children look confused for a moment before continuing lines from the film, lips moving in perfect sync with the overlaid soundtrack.

Happy Place, a partner ad, continues the dissociative identity angle with an elderly couple celebrating their 60th anniversary in a Chinese restaurant. Their conversation raises eyebrows, however, when both diners draw upon iconic lines from When Harry Met Sally with perfect delivery.

Both ads conclude with a look at the movies in question and the message ’some films just stay with us’.
