A virtual David Attenborough leads The Green Planet immersive experience

A virtual Sir David Attenborough features in The Green Planet immersive experience

The BBC’s latest nature docuseries The Green Planet has been reimagined as an immersive experience led by a Sir David Attenborough hologram.

The Green Planet Experience has been developed and built by a consortium including virtual agency Factory 42, EE, BBC Studios, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and production companies Talesmith and Dimenson.

A virtual Attenborough will take visitors through six digitally-enhanced biomes including rainforests, fresh water and saltwater worlds, deserts and changing seasons. Digital seeds, butterflies, and birds will be seen in the sky and fish will be swimming in the sea.

The experience is free to attend, with visitors given a device enabling them to enter the immersive space. The Green Planet Experience opens in London on February 11 at 55 Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus.

Underpinning the experience is a sustainability message showing audiences how vital plants and biodiversity are to the future of the planet.

The project was among the nine recipients of the DCMS £65m 5G creative pot, which awarded grants to companies to explore how 5G could be used in the creative industry.

Factory 42 created the experience. Its founder and chief executive officer John Cassy said: “This ground-breaking sustainable experience blends physical and digital worlds together, creating an extraordinary encounter that provides knowledge [and] entertainment, and in turn builds empathy with the natural world.”

Kew was brought in to consult on the creation of the digital plant life for scientific and horticultural accuracy. Professor Alexandre Antonelli, director of science at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew said using “technology in this way to engage people is so crucial” to inspire people to want to protect the natural world.

Tom Burton, head of interactive at BBC Studios, added: “By innovating in cutting-edge technologies, this ground-breaking experience brings these stories into the world around you to explore and engage with.”

The BBC has thrown marketing weight behind The Green Planet, taking over Green Park tube station on Monday.
