Green Park station becomes Green Planet to launch Attenborough’s latest for BBC

BBC Creative has transformed London’s Green Park tube station to showcase the magical world of plants

To mark the launch of Sir David Attenborough’s latest series The Green Planet, BBC Creative has transformed London’s Green Park tube station into a vivid experience that celebrates the magical world of plants.

The iconic station has been rebranded to ‘Green Planet’ in an attempt to create an immersive experience for passengers. The wider campaign, ‘Welcome to Their World’ utilises every poster space across the southbound Victoria line to showcase a wide spectrum of amazing plant life featured in the series alongside two digital screens that show the trailer from the five part series, which launched on 9 January.

From carnivorous underwater life forms, to humanoid desert cacti, The Green Planet series uses ground-breaking camera technology to explore the inter-connected world of plants, as Sir David Attenborough takes audiences on a journey into their hidden life. In the opening episode, viewers were introduced to a gigantic underground fungus that survives by enlisting an army of ants to feed it leaves from nearby plants.

Stuart Gittings, creative lead at BBC Creative, said of the campaign: “Our goal for ‘Welcome to Their World’ was to showcase the series’ most otherworldly plantlife in the most immersive way possible, so taking over a piece of London’s iconic Underground presented an unmissable opportunity to bring our audience into their world.”

While Johnny Ace, design director at BBC Creative, added: “We looked to our favourite science fiction films for inspiration with these designs. Each poster focuses on a single plant species, and we’ve composed them like portraits of strange creatures from another world. Taking over a whole platform of Green Park station has been huge, and one of the most ambitious projects BBC Creative has ever undertaken.”

BBC Creative has produced a number of unique adverts for major BBC series in recent years. Highlights include the multi-award-winning Dracula Special Build, which used shadow art and cleverly positioned stakes, to create a silhouette of the vampire’s face that appeared as darkness fell. The team also previously appeared to set posters on ‘fire’ for David Attenborough’s natural history series A Perfect Planet and the BBC’s Our Planet Now initiative.
