Ad of The Day: Oreo’s Batman collaboration sees Gotham City constructed of cookies

Oreo and comic book hero Batman have joined forces for a limited edition run of cookies, promoted by a fun-filled video that sees the Gotham City recreated with the sweet treats.

Bringing together two American icons, the short film begins by teasing viewers with various Batman-related symbols engraved into the Oreos before dramatically panning across a cookie-built Gotham City.

Throughout the years, many Batman movies have adopted a monochromatic color scheme reminiscent of film noir classics, which the creatives at Saatchi & Saatchi Düsseldorf have cleverly nodded to with the black and white contrasting tones of Oreo.

The spot is inspired by the various riddles in the comics and aims to entice viewers to explore the Batman universe through a multitude of digital touchpoints designed by MediaMonks.

“Batman is a true icon we all know. It has always been a very dark character,” said Christian Anhut, executive creative director at Saatchi & Saatchi.

“Through riddles, we found a way to link Batman with the playful DNA of Oreo – staying true and authentic to both fantastic brands. It’s been a great partnership.”

Further support for the project will come from social media, TV, print and out-of-home activations. Meanwhile, in-store fans will be able to purchase the unique Batman-embossment cookies.

“We are very excited to share the partnership between Oreo and Batman with fans in Europe,” added Chiara Missio, marketing director at Mondeléz Europe

“It’s an amazing opportunity to create a playful experience together with a much-loved icon. One that builds on the narrative of riddles, but lets fans engage and immerse into The Batman world, even far beyond the film. These are the kind of experiences that make us connect with our consumers and allow them to stay playful.”

The collaboration comes as fans worldwide gear up for the hotly anticipated release of The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz and Colin Farrell.
