LinkedIn is working with the Singapore government on a program to promote skills-based hiring to prepare for new opportunities in a post-pandemic world.

When job seekers pursue an open role through Skills Path, they will be able to strengthen their skills

The program, called Skills Path, aims to change the way candidates are traditionally hired based on their degrees, connections and experience. Instead the program wants to encourage companies to hire candidates based on their skills, and ensure their continuous development after hiring them.

This is to ensure that once the pandemic is over, this will create new opportunities for candidates and employees in the new economy.

“We are so excited to work with the Singapore government on LinkedIn’s Skills Path initiative, and eventually we hope to scale this model globally. This also signifies the start of our rallying cry to everyone who can help. The transition to a skills-based economy is not a task that can be solely undertaken by a single entity,” said Feon Ang, the managing director for Asia Pacific at LinkedIn.

“It will require a multi-stakeholder approach, and we are proud to see Skills Path as an example of a public-private partnership that can help to meet the demand for skills. We hope that companies will join us in being a part of this initiative.”

What is Skills Path?

  • Skills Path helps job seekers develop and demonstrate their skills, and supports companies in expanding their talent pool and fostering a workforce with diverse experiences.

  • Companies including CapitaLand, Carousell, Foodpanda, Lazada, NTUC Enterprise, OCBC Bank, Zalora and Zuellig Pharma have already come on board to offer roles under Skills Path. These companies are hiring for roles like recruiter, data analyst and supply chain coordinator.

  • When job seekers pursue an open role through Skills Path, they will be able to strengthen their skills required for the job with free LinkedIn Learning content and validate their skills by completing Skill Assessments. Job seekers may also wish to record a video or submit a written response to complete the process.

  • This helps companies to evaluate candidates who are pursuing a role in a more equitable way based on their proven skills, instead of solely relying on traditional qualifications like degrees, titles and networks. Through Skills Path, companies will be able to broaden their talent pool and build a more diverse workforce, which is critical to filling vital skills gaps as we move forward in a digital age.

  • There are six types of roles currently available under Skills Path. They are customer service, data analyst, project manager, recruiter, supply chain coordinator and sales development.

  • LinkedIn will be providing additional support in the form of virtual workshops to support the Singapore government’s continued efforts to help mid-career workers strengthen their skills and enhance their employability, as well as learn how to find and build their professional community.

  • Attendees will learn how to set up a LinkedIn profile, how they can fully leverage their professional community through LinkedIn, and glean insights on how companies hire, among other tips.
