The WPP media network has launched the scheme in partnership with education tech company Multiverse as part of its ‘Digital Academy‘ program, which will aim to train apprentices in specialisms such as search, social, programmatic and e-commerce.

What does the scheme offer?

  • The 15-month Digital Academy program will offer apprentices specialist classes and one-to-one teaching in digital marketing principles and coding, with the first six weeks of the scheme focused entirely on training provided by GroupM and Multiverse.

  • Apprentices will be paid £22,000 in London and £20,000 in Manchester. The scheme is bring funded by the Apprenticeship Levy, which sees UK companies contribute 0.5% of their payroll to a pool used for funding apprenticeships.

  • Applications are open now for places on the scheme, which are all open to applicants without university qualifications.

  • GroupM has pledged to create over 100 apprenticeships over the next 12 months.

Why has GroupM created the program?

  • GroupM predicts that its revenue from digital advertising will grow 33% in 2021, making it one of its biggest areas of growth.

  • Paul Cooper, chief operating officer at GroupM agency Mediacom North, said: “Digital marketing as a specialism is seeing huge growth, especially over the last 16 months, creating a massive demand for people with these specialist skillsets. However, people with these skillsets are in short supply. At GroupM we want to train the next generation to help us continue to grow.

  • ”We are passionate about recruiting non-graduates and giving people real apprenticeships in an industry that will dominate the next 20 years in terms of media consumption. We want young, diverse talent from any and all backgrounds that reflect the society we market our clients’ products to.

  • ”We are looking for applicants for both our Manchester and London centers of excellence to help us build our business and your career while having fun as we do it. You don’t have to have a degree to succeed in our business. Most of our senior people have come through the business learning by doing on-the-job training – the industry is that fast-paced, it’s the best way to learn.”

  • Multiverse founder and chief executive officer Euan Blair said: “Recruiting talented digital marketers is essential to media and advertising agencies around the world, and apprenticeships are becoming the best way to find and develop that talent. The expansion of GroupM’s apprenticeship program will create career-defining opportunities for talented people from a diverse range of backgrounds.”
