Martin Compston has taken time off from rooting out bent coppers at Hillside Lane Station to put his feet up for a well-deserved pint courtesy of Tennent’s.

The brewer has enlisted the popular actor, famed for his Line of Duty role, to channel his Scots brogue in support of a brief history lesson charting 23 years of near misses, defeats and disappointment after Scotland qualified for their first major tournament in a generation.

Coinciding with the national team’s debut against the Czech Republic at Hampden later today, the fireside chat serves as a rousing warm-up for fans before the teams take to the pitch at 2pm.

Setting audience nerves at ease in a Scotland top and tartan pajama bottoms, Compston reclines in his chair with an outsize leather-bound volume to recap the past 23 years and fire up the home support with an intoxicating mix of patriotism, alcohol and history.

Addressing fans direct from Tennent’s social channel in a branded film, Compston rallies the troops with a bedtime battle cry: “It’s taken a while, but we’re finally here. It’s the night before Scotland takes on Europe and anticipation is at an all-time high for what lies ahead tomorrow.

“Wherever you’re watching; at home, in the pub with a pint of Tennent’s, or for a lucky few, at Hampden – we’ve been waiting 23 years for this match to come, and only one thing is certain. We’re made for this.”

The film, created by Material, with production by Freakworks, developed an intimate message that formed part of Tennent’s ‘Made for This’ campaign. This positions the brewer as chief flag bearer for the national team during the delayed Euro 2020 competition.

Billed as the drinks brand’s biggest campaign in over a decade, the promotional activity centers on a digital hub and extends to broadcast, OOH and digital spots.

Today’s match serves as a taster for the main event of a Scotland v England battle at Wembley Stadium this Friday, to be screened live on ITV at 8pm.
