The Drum chats to Dipesh Mistry, associate creative director at Brave and chair of the jury for The Chip Shop Awards 2021, about the impact the past year has had on creativity.

With the UK coming up on a year from its first lockdown, has working from home has benefited creatives?

Dipesh Mistry, associate creative director at Brave, says: “It really depends on the person. Some people really thrive on the energy of an office, and the ability to bounce ideas off one another. I’m one of them!”

He describes his own experience working remotely in Canada for two months as a rehearsal: “The benefit of working from home, away from that agency life, is you get to work at your own pace. You can block out distractions, in an environment that you’re used to, and you can surround yourself with inspiration.”

What does he miss about the office life? “The culture we’ve built at Brave. I’d like to go back to the agency when we can – I think we all miss the Thursday beers.”

But Mistry believes some of the changes to the way we work will not be going away. “There’s a new model now. There was a lot of worry and panic among agencies when this started, but we’ve got past it. Agencies have figured it out. People are happier now working from home, but we might want to come back for two or three days a week.”

For him, it reflects well on the industry. “We’ve embraced the change, we’ve problem-solved, and as a result creativity is shining.”
