Morrisons employees are behind the supermarket’s latest Christmas ad, which shines a light on how its unsold food is donated to charity.

Despite having already released a seasonal ad this year, the supermarket chain has opted to debut a second, low-budget film just two weeks before Christmas after its management was approached by colleagues, Pam Abbott and Bev Kelly, who wished to highlight the store's daily community work.

Every day at Morrisons' UK stores, unsold food that is still good enough to eat is donated to local charities as part of the supermarket's scheme to reduce food waste and help local communities. Over the last three years, the store has given away over five million products.

Abbott and Kelly, the employees behind the film, are both community champions who work at Morrisons Wakefield. Together, they wrote, directed and appeared in the Christmas film which depicts the daily story of their community work – following a pack of Morrison’s mince pies on a journey from a Wakefield store to the city’s Street Kitchen, where they are handed out to those who are sleeping rough or in need of food.

Abbot and Kelly said: “Every day Morrisons community champions up and down the country work to help their local neighbourhoods. We thought this film would help to show our year-round food donations. We also hoped to remind people that Christmas is a time for kindness and giving – especially to those who are struggling most.”

Anna Howard from Wakefield Street Kitchen commented: “I love feeding people. I try to feed everyone no matter what and until the food is gone everyone gets fed. So, having the donations throughout the year – and not just at Christmas – helps us to keep going.”

The film is timely, as back in November the UK's largest food bank charity, The Trussel Trust, announced it was expecting more people than ever before to access food banks in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
