The platform will showcase multimedia content highlighting Japan’s landscapes and cities as well as an in-depth exploration of Japanese culture, innovation and society, according to an official statement.

BBC has also appointed Sarah Keating in the newly-created position of Asia commissioning editor, overseeing vertical stories and videos from the region and acting as editor of ‘Japan 2020’.

Mary Wilkinson, head of editorial content at BBC Global News said: “From technological innovation to distinctive fashion and world-class cuisine, Japan continues to be an eye-catcher for people across the world."

"With an even greater global focus on Japan in the lead up to 2020, it’s the perfect time for the BBC to be redoubling our commitment to our coverage of Japan.”

Brands must find ways to advertise around one of the world’s most tightly regulated events as the International Olympic Committee (the IOC) takes the protection of their intellectual property very seriously.
