Britbox, the fledgeling digital video subscription service created by the BBC and ITV, has received a welcome content boost after both Channel 5 and Comedy Central reached an agreement to share hundreds of hours of content ahead of launch.

The dual additions will include a mix of factual and entertainment programming from Channel 5 in the form of boxsets following a 30-day catch-up window on My5. This will be joined by a selection of original British comedy sourced from Comedy Central.

Reemah Sakaan, group launch director for ITV SVOD said: “We are thrilled to announce that another British Public Service Broadcaster is joining BritBox, ensuring that we offer viewers the very best of British creativity across a variety of genres.”

Arran Tindall, senior vice president, commercial and content distribution, Viacom International Media Networks added: “Under Viacom’s ownership we have significantly increased Channel 5’s investment in original UK content and we’re delighted to bring our popular homegrown content to an even wider audience through BritBox, alongside a selection of Comedy Central’s much-loved UK programming.”

Britbox has been positioned as a patriotic rival to US-dominated services such as Amazon Prime and Netflix by drawing together the best of British in one location.
