Spotify members have a new option for enjoying music on the move with the launch of a bare-bones service providing sonic pick me ups to everyone irrespective of network availability, data and hardware.

Spotify Lite has been built from scratch to provide a streamlined, simplified and slink alternative for people using older devices or out in the wild to discover and enjoy new songs and artists.

Kalle Persson, senior product manager at Spotify, said: “Spotify Lite was built from the ground up based on user feedback from around the world, allowing millions more to enjoy the world’s best music experience — especially in areas with limited bandwidth and phone storage.”

Weighing in at a scant 10MB the app also comes with an optional data limit, notifying the user when it is in danger of being breached. The play will likely open up fresh revenue streams for Spotify in unchartered markets.

Lite is available as a separate download for both Free and Premium users across 36 global markets including Brazil, Saudi Arabia and India and can be run alongside or independently from the main Spotify app on all Android phones running version 4.3 or higher.

Spotify has recently diversified into podcasts in a bid to break even.
