Salesforce dives deeper into analytics with $15.7bn Tableau purchase

Salesforce buys Tableau to give customers a deeper, data-driven look at their consumers

Salesforce has announced the acquisition of data analytics platform Tableau for $15.7bn, the largest purchase in company history.

According to a statement from Salesforce, each company's board of directors has approved the deal, which is expected to close in the fiscal third quarter of 2019.

Based in Seattle, Tableau is a self-service data platform that helps customers wade through and analyze scores of data. It is used by over 86,000 organizations globally, including Verizon and Netflix.

Salesforce is betting that combining its CRM platform with Tableau's massive data set will boost its Customer 360 initiative, a sales and marketing service that aims to provide Salesforce customers with a full view of their consumers across touchpoints.

"Tableau helps people see and understand data, and Salesforce helps people engage and understand customers," said Marc Benioff, chairman and co-chief executive officer of Salesforce. "It's truly the best of both worlds for our customers--bringing together two critical platforms that every customer needs to understand their world."

Fellow co-chief executive Keith Block said: "Data is the foundation of every digital transformation, and the addition of Tableau will accelerate our ability to deliver customer success by enabling a truly unified and powerful view across all of a customer's data."

As a result of the deal, Benioff said on a press call that San Francisco-based Salesforce will make Seattle its second headquarters.

Salesforce has yet to respond to The Drum's request for comment when asked if the acquisition will result in any layoffs.

This splashy buy comes a week after Google bought another big-data firm, Looker, as the company looks to bolster its Cloud offering.
