Sodastream ad says 'goodbye' to Game of Thrones (and single use plastics?)

SodaStream, well known for embracing beloved Game of Thrones actors in its ads, has done so for what it professes to be the final time as season eight approaches the end.

The sparkling water brand, now owned by PepsiCo, will 'Say Goodbye' (both the campaign title and backing track name) to Game Of Thrones actors Thor Bjornsson aka 'The Mountain', Hannah Waddingham aka 'Septa' and Kristian Nairn aka 'Hodor' and the show that built their profiles.

In 2016, SodaSteam embraced 'The Mountain' and 'Septa' to shame single-use plastic buyers - tying into an unmissable moment on the show. The ad was eventually banned by the ASA in the UK. It has since used Game of Thrones actors in its global ad campaigns to tackle plastic issues.

Now on the ninth video that SodaStream has created with the series’ actors in just three years, (a move it has said has connected with "millions" of consumers), it again underlines the damage that plastic has on the environment. Last year's ‘It’s time for a change’ campaign was reportedly viewed by 16 million people.

SodaStream chief executive Daniel Birnbaum said: "We are always looking for fun and exciting ways to convey the message that we can enjoy fresh sparkling beverages in a planet-friendly way.

“We encourage consumers to say goodbye to single-use plastic and hello to reusable solutions."
