Twitter has acquired quote-sharing app Highly as part of its continuing efforts to make the platform a more desirable place for publishers to host and post content.

Twitter courts publishers with Highly acquisition

By drawing the current Highly team within its fold Twitter will be able to quickly capitalise on the sharing technology and expertise in order to incorporate more excerpts and quotes from respected sources into its timeline.

Full migration of services is already underway with Highly setting a deadline of 26 April to close operations at its iOS and Slack app, although all existing highlights will be preserved.

In a statement confirming its move, a Twitter spokesman said: “We are excited to welcome the Highly team to Twitter. Their expertise will accelerate our product and design thinking around making Twitter more conversational.” We’ve asked about what data portability options Highly will offer.”

Highlight works by enabling a succinct snapshot of a particular article by utilising quotes instead of links to make the process of sharing appear more personal, a process which can be completed simply by swiping a finger to transform the text into a clickable image and link.

Twitter is in process of a major spring clean having adopted a proactive stance in intercepting abuse and introducing a new mute tweet button.
