The broadcaster has been battling to see off boycott calls over political bias, with up to 33 advertisers having already dropped their support from Fox shows to avoid being dragged into the controversies.

The issue came to a head last week in a story for The New Yorker which highlighted just how close the station had come to the Trump administration, raising concern that it was effectively operating as a mouthpiece for the president.

Increasingly ugly opinions have been aired by the pair, culminating in a widely condemned assertion from Pirro that a Democratic representative from Minnesota had prioritised sharia law over constitutional rights. Remarks which were ultimately condemned by Fox News itself.

Carlson meanwhile has been no less retiring in his views, enflamed by recently revealed comments made a decade ago when he referred to women as being ‘extremely primitive’.

Amid the scandal advertisers including TD Ameritrade, Just For Men and Peloton have already severed ties although more may have withdrawn without making any public pronouncement.

Last year Sky dropped Fox News in the UK after 15 years citing reasons of commercial viability.
