HBO Make a Little Trouble

Thandie Newton in HBO's 'Make a Little Trouble' for IWD

‘Make a Little Trouble,’ by Mekanism New York and HBO Creative Services, is an extension of HBO’s ‘Because of Her’ campaign that launched in August which recognizes and celebrates the contributions of female talent at HBO, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. See the film below.

Created for IWD, HBO highlights a speech given by the late screenwriter and director Nora Ephron to the graduates of Wellesley College in 1996. Clips of various HBO female characters are shown throughout Nora’s speech, including Nora herself from HBO’s Documentary Everything Is Copy, as they perfectly embody the essence of her message – don’t restrict women to being “ladies”. Instead, celebrate women who are defying expectations, breaking rules, and challenge the ways in which women are traditionally portrayed. HBO believes that strong, surprising, unconventional female characters are a big part of what gives their stories a more interesting, dynamic, and surprising perspective.

In the minute-long promo, we see everyone from Game of Thrones queen Daenerys Targaryen to Issa Dee from Insecure, Amy Adams’ troubled Camille from Sharp Objects to Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the women of Big Little Lies, all as Ephron’s voice over says things like “I hope you choose not to be a lady” and “make some trouble on behalf of women.” It ends with the #becauseofher social hashtag.
