Plan International uses soundscape to highlight the dangers women face when walking home at night
More than half of Australian women don’t feel safe walking home at night. To raise awareness of this, humanitarian organisation Plan International has created an immersive 3D soundscape that follows a woman’s journey home.
Plan International highlights the experience of women walking home alone at night
The soundscape aims to highlight the harassment, fear and panic women encounter on a solo walk home at night as they face the uncertainty of not knowing what threats or danger they may experience.
It follows a 2018 study of 38 countries which revealed Australia had
the largest gap between how men and women feel about their safety when walking alone at night. The study included countries with much higher homicide rates than Australia, such as Mexico, Brazil and Russia.
Plan International’s aim is to draw awareness to the ways women have been taught to modify their behaviour to feel safer when walking home alone at night.
The campaign's objective is to ignite a conversation and movement to support women.
The campaign, which is supported by Spotify, provides listeners with simple tips and behaviour changes they can start making immediately to help women feel safer. The tips are available as 30-second audio clips on Spotify and are also available at plan.org.au/walklikeawoman
The campaign was created by Cummins & Partners.
