A heartbreaking campaign by a collection of animal welfare organisations is hoping to encourage people to adopt a shelter dog this festive season.

The Last Meal is hoping to boost dog adoptions during the festive season

The film, “The Last Meal, was created by DDB Remedy with Doggie Rescue, Best Friends, Voiceless Australia, Starting Over Dog Rescue, SA Dog Rescue, and SAFE.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the more than 50,000 abandoned dogs which are put down across Australia every year. It also hopes to shine a light on the issue globally where more than 2 million dogs are euthanised around the world.

The film was directed by Jonathan May and features a voiceover by Avengers and Kick-Ass actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who voices the thoughts of a dog on death row.

The pro-bono film is being shared via social and digital channels.

Scott Smith, executive creative director, DDB Remedy, said, “Many of the people behind the creation and production of this film regularly donate their time to organisations like Doggie Rescue in NSW. Through them, we became aware that local pounds and shelters are inundated with dogs during Christmas.

“While pounds and shelters they do everything they can, they simply can’t house hundreds of dogs indefinitely; so tragically, tens of thousands are put down every year through no fault of their own. This moving film gives them a voice at a time of year when for many Australians, caring and compassion are paramount.”
