Nintendo has released its grip on video game bloggers (vloggers) seeking to share their accomplishments with others on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube, by annulling a requirement to register for their revenue-sharing scheme and restrictions on what content can be shared.

Nintendo relaxes rules surrounding Twitch & YouTube vloggers

The change brings the Japanese giant into line with Microsoft and Sony and follows increasingly vociferous complaints from gamers that they were unable to share footage online for fear of sparking a copyright claim.

In a statement confirming the changes Nintendo wrote: “As long as you follow some basic rules, we will not object to your use of gameplay footage and/or screenshots captured from games for which Nintendo owns the copyright.”

Under the revised guidelines players will be able to share videos of Nintendo products on the provision that they include their own creative input or commentary. Publishers will also be freed up to claim advertising revenue from these clips via the partner programs run by Twitch and YouTube.

Nintendo will draw a line at any gameplay footage which is not accompanied by any user generated content however, unless captured using built-in tools contained in the Nintendo Switch.
