Joe Carter: Colenso BBDO

Below is Joe Carter, one of those at the top of their field who work in the UK biz dev sector.

Name: Joe Carter

Job Title: communications director

Agency: Colenso BBDO

What were your highlights of last year?

Spending the last two years at Contagious has been phenomenal. Working with and signing clients like ASOS, Disney and TJX Europe was astounding - looking after our global relationship with WPP agencies was brilliant, too. The learnings at Contagious were like no other - they truly are the most remarkable, clued up people you'll meet.

What has been your most memorable win - and why?

They are all memorable. If I had to pick one, it would be Disney. The most creative company in the world. Their CMO's are, quite simply, legendary to work with and learn from. And it's led to a continued relationship here in New Zealand. The idea of relationship building vs. a quick sale is fundamental to my growth and success.

How would you describe your approach to business development?

Business development becomes a passion, so there's no real difference in the work/life balance - it merges into one. For me, a concise, strategic approach to BD ensures a successful one. And sharing this approach with senior management and encouraging the entire agency to take responsibility for new business growth is imperative.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Get mentors. It's the quickest shortcut to success. Model their behaviour, their career; listen to the similarities and go figure.

What would be your number one tip to anyone starting in business development?

Get mentors. And be persistent. Twice.

What is your new business soundtrack?

Paul Kalkbrenner - Azure
