Some may call him a workaholic but entrepreneur-turned-CEO, Gary Vaynerchuk, claims he shouldn’t be unfairly critiqued about his work-life balance if he truly loves and is passionate about his job.

The Drum’s chief executive officer and co-founder Diane Young sat down with Vaynerchuk for a video interview in which they discussed getting the balance right.

“No-one talks about quality; everyone's talking about quantity,” he says, comparing his dedication to working to some people’s questionable parenting styles. “It’s really nice that some mums and dads can be home at 5pm but if they're both on the phone all evening, how much time are they actually spending with their kids?”

For Vaynerchuk, he cites the biggest problem with cultivating a good work-life culture is knowing where to spend your money and suggests that having a better relationship with your purse strings could be a great reliever of stress.

“I think most people have bad work-life balance because they buy dumb shit,” he says. “They want to look cool in front of other people because they're insecure.”
