National Geographic spreads the word for ‘Planet or Plastic?’ environmental initiative

The title is using the content app to help raise awareness of the topical global pollution problem by running a creative storytelling challenge, asking readers to put down in words how the plastic pile-up is polluting the world’s oceans.

Writers will be tasked with putting the reality of the crisis forward in their own words, harnessing artistic activism with a view to inspiring others to play their part in the clean-up effort.

Stories can be shared using the #PlanetOrPlastic hashtag with readers encouraged to sign their own personal pledge to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics. The most convincing messages will then be promoted directly on NationalGeographoc.com.

Jill Cress, chief marketing and communications officer at National Geographic Partners, said:“Eight million tons of plastic flow into the ocean every year, impacting marine life and doing irreparable damage to our world.

"Storytelling is among the most impactful forms of advocating for positive change, and by partnering with Wattpad we will engage a passionate, global community of readers and writers to help inspire the next generation of stewards for our planet.”

Brands have been queuing up to play their part in the plastics fightback with American Express and Sky joining marine conservation organisation Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace with hard-hitting messages of their own.
