AppNexus chief executive Brian O’Kelley is to step down from the role to take on a role in an advisory capacity just months after the adtech business was acquired by AT&T.
In a note sent to staff by AT&T’s recently rebranded advertising division Xandr’s chief executive Brian Lesser, it was outlined that AppNexus’ co-founder O’Kelley would take on the new strategic advisory role for “the foreseeable future.”
It added: “Brian is a leader’s leader, and I appreciate him setting up a fantastic team at AppNexus that will help lead Xandr to the next level,” while revealing that also taking up advisory roles would be the company’s chief financial officer Jonathan Hsu and its chief people and legal officer, Nithya Das. Further changes to roles were outlined in the note, including Ryan Christensen, senior vice president of product who will take over responsibility for all existing AppNexus products and new digital platform products.
AppNexus was acquired by AT&T in June, after WPP sold its stake in the business. O’Kelley co-founded it in 2007 with Mike Nolet, who stepped down as chief technology officer in 2013.
AT&T declined to make any comment when approached by The Drum.
The full memo from Lesser has been republished below:
This week, I celebrate my one-year anniversary at AT&T. And I as I reflect on the year, I’m proud of what we have accomplished together. We have grown our leadership position in advanced TV advertising, AppNexus has provided us with the best talent and technology in the business, and finally we have a name – Xandr – that unifies our new organization and has the industry buzzing.
I made a commitment to keep you apprised as we make progress integrating our company and today I have some additional announcements about the expanded leadership team of Xandr and our updated structure.
As our company has expanded globally, I’ve made some intentional steps to grow my direct reporting team to help meet the needs of our customers. Effective immediately, the following executives will now report to me:
Ryan Christensen, Senior Vice President, Product – Ryan will oversee all existing AppNexus products and new digital platform products. Product Marketing will move to Kirk McDonald’s marketing team. Ryan will work alongside Christina Beaumier, Vice President, Product who will lead development of our TV platform. She will continue to report directly to me.
Ben John, Chief Technology Officer – Ben will manage all engineering and technology resources within AppNexus and Xandr Media. John Doehler, Assistant Vice President, Advertising Technology Group-Engineering, will now report directly to Ben. In addition, Jenny Leung, will also move to Ben’s team from the People Team as the Vice President of Technology Strategy and Operations.
Michael Rubenstein, President, AppNexus – Michael will continue to lead and expand our Enterprise and International businesses. Ali Galasso, Jeff Goldstein and his team will now be a part of Rick Welday’s organization. This will allow us to pool our resources selling to agencies and brands to capture as much spend as possible from our largest market. The AppNexus US Enterprise Buy-Side Sales teams will continue to report to Michael. Marcus Startzel, SVP of Marketplace Development, AppNexus will be assisting Michael with the hand-off and leaving the company during Q4 as part of this transition.
Our new senior leadership team will also include the following team members:
Catherine Williams, Chief Data Scientist – Catherine will lead all data science for Xandr and will work closely with Ryan Christensen on data activation within our digital platforms. Catherine will now report to Tim Barnes, Chief Data Officer.
Jason Brown, Vice President, Ad Sales Partnerships, Xandr Media
Amy Leifer, Vice President, Sales Planning and Operations, Xandr Media
Matt Van Houten, Vice President, Product Development, Xandr Media
They will continue to report to Rick Welday, President, Media Sales and Operations, Xandr Media.
As I shared in August, various corporate functions have started to integrate within Xandr. Updates on these teams are as follows:
Ray Carpenter, Chief Financial Officer – Joining his existing organization is Doina Harris, Senior Vice President, Analytics. She will now report directly to Ray. There are no changes to Doina’s existing team.
Rick Gomez, Vice President, Human Resources – In addition to Rick’s current team, the AppNexus People team will now join his organization. Antoinette Hamilton, Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion and Community Experience and Shariq Mohammad, Vice President, Talent Management will now report directly to Rick and will continue with their existing responsibilities. Kaitlin Carleton, Senior Compensation Manager will now report into Caroline Dickson, Talent Rewards Director.
Kirk McDonald, Chief Marketing Officer – The AppNexus Commercial and Product Marketing organization will join Kirk’s current marketing team. Veronique Valcu will lead platform product marketing reporting to Kristen Fellows, AVP, Product Marketing.
Finally, I would like to outline some changes that I recognize will be felt especially throughout the AppNexus organization.
With the integration of the AppNexus People Team, Nithya Das will continue to support the business through the end of this month and then will serve as an advisor to Rick Gomez until the end of the year. Throughout her seven-year tenure at AppNexus, Nithya has served as AppNexus’ General Counsel and most recently as its Chief People and Legal Officer. She was also the executive sponsor for the women’s network and AppNexus Impact — as well as a leader of the company’s diversity and inclusion initiatives. We would like to thank her for of all her contributions and wish her the very best in the future.
In addition, Jonathan Hsu will serve as an advisor to me during this transitionary period. Jon has served as Chief Financial Officer of AppNexus for more than four years and played a vital role in the company’s growth and success. He has also been a mentor of mine throughout my career and I appreciate his on-going support of Xandr.
Lastly, over the past couple of months, Brian O’Kelley has been instrumental in leading AppNexus during this time of transition. He has provided critical insight and I appreciate his leadership. As Brian and I discussed the best path forward, we made the decision together that he would transition out of the daily operations of AppNexus and move into a strategic advisory role for the foreseeable future. He will continue to report to me directly.
Brian started AppNexus more than 11 years ago and has built an incredible company with the best technology and talent. AppNexus is a company that is respected around the globe, not only for the platform and enterprise customer base, but also because of its diverse and inclusive workplace. Brian is a leader’s leader, and I appreciate him setting up a fantastic team at AppNexus that will help lead Xandr to the next level. I am constantly inspired by Brian’s passion and incredible spirit; he will always be an enormous part of our success.
