Netflix has appointed the chief executive of publishing giant Axel Springer to its board of directors.

Axel Springer

Axel Springer SE CEO Mathias Döpfner

Mathias Döpfner is currently chairman and CEO of Axel Springer SE, publisher of newsmedia titles like Bild, Die Welt, Business Insider, Politico and Fakt.

Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings welcomed Döpfner to the board. "His leadership at the vanguard of both European business and digital media brings us invaluable perspective and insight as we work to build and constantly improve our business all over the world."

On the appointment, Döpfner added: "Netflix is one of a kind, it has created a world-leading entertainment service that continues to break new ground for the benefit of creators and consumers. A radically innovative culture and governance are essential parts of its success, and it is a tremendous pleasure and privilege to be part of this journey."

Döpfner has worked at Axel Springer SE for two decades. He was initially editor-in-chief of Die Welt and since 2000. The print media brand underwent a significant digital transformation and he was an integral part of this process. Netflix would do well to lean on his editorial knowledge, understanding of the European market and insight into monetising content - especially amid the rumours it is considering creating an ad-funded feature or product.
