The upcoming Crazy Rich Asians movie made the headlines for all the wrong reasons during its Hollywood premiere on August 7.
The movie, which is based on Singaporean-American novelist Kevin Kwan’s book, was produced in Singapore and Malaysia, and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board and Economic Development Board.
During the premiere, as celebrities walked the red carpet, observers noticed that the ‘g’ in ‘Singapore’ was replaced with a ‘c’, and STB’s Passion Made Possible campaign tagline for Singapore was missing ‘i’ in ‘possible’ on the sponsors' board.
According to The Straits Times, Warner Brothers, the distributor of the movie and STB explained that the ‘extreme heat’ led to the errors on the board.
“Prior to the official start of the premiere, STB had inspected and ensured the accuracy of our Passion Made Possible logo on the numerous event backdrop panels. In line with the protocol of movie premieres, the working team was then asked to clear the red carpet prior to the arrival of the cast," a STB spokesperson told the broadsheet.
"It is most unfortunate that some time during the red carpet, part of the lettering of our logo on one of the panels must have fallen off. “
A Warner Brothers spokesperson added: “The Los Angeles premiere of Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Crazy Rich Asians” was a celebration of both the film and the beauty and excitement of Singapore.”
“Unfortunately, due to extreme heat that day, some of the lettering on our red carpet wall melted after the event commenced and, in some photography, Singapore appears to be misspelled. We sincerely apologise for any distress or embarrassment this may have caused.”
