An investigation launched in the wake of that incident is now nearing conclusion, providing the group with a clearer understanding of what occurred, including the first evidence that ‘some of this data may have left our systems’ – although it is at pains to stress that none of these records held payment card or bank details.

As a precautionary measure however the group is urging proactive housekeeping while it gets its own house in order, including investment in enhanced security controls, monitoring and testing to prevent a recurrence.

Dixons Carphone chief executive Alex Baldock commented: “As a precaution, we're now also contacting all our customers to apologise and advise on the steps they can take to protect themselves.

“Again, we're disappointed in having fallen short here, and very sorry for any distress we've caused our customers. I want to assure them that we remain fully committed to making their personal data safe with us."

Hacking has become a global concern for businesses with a raft of big names affected in recent months; notably WPP and Uber.
