Football fever afflicts TFL with Gareth Southgate tube station rebrand

The 48-hour name change kicked off this morning with bemused commuters arriving at the rebadged transport hub, complete with banners pasted on the platform walls reading: “Thanks Gareth for the incredible journey. Southgate is yours.”

Southgate has earned praise from England fans for driving his team to unexpected success in the 2018 World Cup, after they reached the semi-finals of the global contest – their best result since 1990.

In a statement TfL said: “We're delighted to be able to show our appreciation to Gareth and the team by renaming the station in his honour.”

Southgate’s honour will be short-lived however with the station reverting to its original title by the end of Tuesday.

Southgate's biggest cheerleader has been M&S which has seen a mini sales boom as fans emptied stores of its waistcoats to emulate the managers pitch-side dress code.
