London has found itself at the seat of a modern-day Nordic invasion with a decision by communications agency Spoon to acquire local content agency Southerly, creating a full-service communications and marketing agency at a stroke.

Spoon swallows Southerly to form pan-European agency

Spanning London, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmo, Oslo and Helsinki the combined business will give the Swedish business the scale it needs to corner new markets and expand its existing offer.

Spoon, owned by publisher Bonnier, is already the largest content agency in the Nordics, serving brands such as Volvo, Sandvik and Microsoft. For its part Southerly offers a complementary skillset encompassing content marketing, employee engagement, internal communication for the likes of Shell, Philips and RBS.

Anders Ribba, chief executive of Spoon, said: “Establishing Spoon in the UK has been on our wish list for quite some time, but it wasn’t until we met Southerly that we found the perfect match. We share a strong belief in the power of authentic and story-driven communications. We’re similar in many ways and I’m convinced that we can develop together, both in the Nordics and in the UK. We will exchange specialist knowledge and resources with each other from day one.

Shelley Hoppe, chief executive of Southerly added: “Right from our very first meeting, it was obvious that we had developed a very similar philosophy and approach to both delivering the very best possible work for our clients and developing and empowering our people. We are delighted to be joining the Spoon group – it feels like a natural next step that will undoubtedly enhance opportunities for our clients and staff.”

Hoppe will sit on a newly enlarged board at Southerly following the transition.
