Last year only YouTube beat Netflix for Over The Top (OTT) viewers, the Alphabet company claiming 185.9 million to Netflix's 128 million. This compared well to the 85.3 million reach of Amazon Video and 34.7 million audience for Hulu.
Paul Verna, eMarketer principal analyst, said: “Netflix enters a new fiscal year after a period of robust growth in its revenues, profits, content spending, subscribers and stock price. Whether the company can sustain this momentum in 2018 remains to be seen, but many indicators point to its continued leadership in the subscription video space.
"For the foreseeable future, Netflix will continue to focus on areas that have driven its success in recent years: international expansion and original content.”
The US market as a whole is expected to see 228.8 million people watch digital content on any device this year, a 35% rise on 2017. Each individual will spend an average of 1h 22 min per day watching digital video, an increase of 7% on last year – compared to the 3h 52 min spent watching traditional television.
