Sonos is temporarily pulling ads from Facebook in wake of Cambridge Analytica scandal

Sonos is temporarily suspending advertising across Facebook in light of the Cambridge Analytica scandal that's rocked the social giant in recent days.


“We are concerned by the recent revelations about Facebook and the exploitation of its platform,” the company said in a blog post. “The Cambridge Analytica scandal, like many recent headlines coming out of Silicon Valley, raises questions about whether Big Tech is doing enough to balance its own interests with one of its biggest responsibilities: Safeguarding your privacy.”

The home speaker brand is also pulling ads from Google, YouTube,Twitter and Facebook-owned Instagram as a result of the scandal. Starting Monday, it will stop advertising on these platforms until April 2. Money the brand typically spends on advertising across these channels will instead be donated to RightsCon, a digital rights conference.

Sonos also plans to “go dark” on its Facebook and Instagram accounts next week to show “solidarity with those seeking to build a healthier, more consumer-friendly tech ecosystem.”

As for why the the brand is only pulling advertising for a week, Sonos said the week-long suspension is part of its strategy to advocate for social good within tech.

“Despite the flaws of these massive digital networks, we fundamentally believe in the power of technology to bring us together and to create deeper, shared experiences,” it said. “We have found Facebook, Instagram, and other online platforms to be incredibly effective ways to reach our customers and to share our mission as a company — not to mention stay in touch with friends and family in our personal lives. But there’s plenty of room for evolution. Now is the time to have the hard discussions and to support those who drive things forward in an effort to make us all better technologists and more educated consumers of technology.”
