Social network Twitter has buffered its live sports package with the signature of Major League Soccer (MLS) rights over the next three years.

Live matches, highlights and features will also be available to US Twitter users during the season where the network promises it will double down on “innovative executions”.

The broadcast started on Saturday 10 of March with Real Salt Lake’s clash with LAFC, a six goal thriller which ended 1-5.

The fixtures will be broadcast every Saturday for nine more weeks before some Friday and Sunday fixtures are thrown into the mix.

Chris Schlosser, senior vice president of media at MLS, said: "MLS constantly strives to connect with fans in new and innovative ways. Our fans are the youngest and most socially engaged in pro sports, which is why we are excited to partner with Twitter to feature live matches on their platform."

Kay Madati, vice president and global head of content partnerships at Twitter, added: "We are excited to collaborate with Major League Soccer to bring live soccer matches and video highlights to Twitter.

"Passionate MLS fans will now have live match day action alongside real-time commentary from experts and fellow fans all in one place on Twitter."

Last year Facebook secured 22 MLS games, showing a hunger for sport on both platforms. As it stands there seem to be no buyers for two packages in the much costlier Premier League rights which are still up for tender.
