The Drum Design Awards judges talk talent and rising stars

Fresh ideas and new talent drives the industry to push boundaries and create work that sticks in minds for years to come. That is why The Drum Design Awards has created a new category, young designer of the year, which is open to nominations now.

The Drum spoke to six professionals from The Design Awards judging panel to explore the stand-outs for them.

John Mathers, director of the British Design Fund

The 'Votes for Women Special Stamps' was the first solo Royal Mail project by Katie Cadwallader, a designer from Supple Studio. Having worked with their design team on a few projects previously, one of the design managers approached her company asking if she would be the design lead. Intended to celebrate the centenary of women getting the vote in Britain, she began the fascinating task of immersing herself in all things Suffrage, in order to arm herself with enough knowledge to do this incredible story justice.

All the 'Votes for Women' typography on the stamps is courtesy of the women themselves, lifted straight from posters/demonstration flyers/newspapers/adverts produced by the suffrage movement campaigners.

Chloe Templeman, creative director, Design Bridge

When I visited the D&AD New Blood exhibition last year I did a takeover on the Design Bridge Instagram account to share some of my favourite work. One that sticks in my mind is the Christmas Fairy bottle by Jack Parker & Dominic Parsons. It was just one of those ideas that I was surprised didn’t already exist in real life. It’s a simple, bold idea that was provocative and clever, and something I wish I had thought of.

While there are two standard gender symbols (man and woman), the world and its people have changed. This cleaver brand rejects the traditional binary and puts you at the centre. Its logo and packaging, designed by Ned Image and Laura Hiscock, uses the traditional gender symbols, but twists them into something that applies to everyone; men, women, and genderqueer. It’s a brand that is truly inclusive to all.

A great idea elegantly executed.

Sophie Maxwell, futures director, Pearlfisher

A piece of work from one who became one of our own young designers is the creation of a first-of-its-kind, sparkling coconut water brand, TONIQ. Designed by Christiana Theophanopoulous, TONIQ aims to tap into the growing cultural shift that’s seen us reconsider alcohol’s role in our social lives. We love the lush details which nod to the tropics and inspired by the humble coconut, TONIQ represents an elevated approach to the soft drinks category, which is often dominated by FMCG bright and sugary options. Drawing on cues from the fashion world with a sense of fun, the design is an inherently elegant and more premium take on the world of sparkling coconut water. We can’t wait to see what the 2018 graduates have in store for us this year!

Hiten Bhatt, creative director, RAPP

Fabric of the Nation is a D&AD New Blood project that resonated with me on an emotional level. The labels and questions around what it means to be British can be very divisive. But I like how Sian MacFarlane used typography synonymous with a more coveted kind of label to challenge our definition of British identity. The visual execution brings the DNA profiles of famous British citizens to life, celebrating our differences as well as our shared identity.

To mark our third year sponsoring the Letterpress Collective’s Festival of Print, we created a series of posters to promote the event. The festival was inspired by an epic bike ride undertaken by Letterpress Collective founder, Nick Hand. Our young designers Jasmine Rees and Lily Papadopoulos threw their hearts and souls into the project, approaching the work with a maturity beyond their years. They were able to extract the most interesting sentiments from our interviews with Nick and weave these into witty visual articulations, grounded in craft.

The Drum Design Awards is looking for the top young designer in the industry. This special category has been been created to encourage and reward young talent, 30 and under. People can nominate themselves or someone else and the winner will be shortlisted by the Design awards judges. The entry extension deadline is Friday March 23.
