Ad of the Day: true story inspires Lotto NZ's tale of two winning armoured truck drivers
DDB New Zealand’s latest work for the Kiwi Lotto is a touching examination of male friendship, drawn from a true story of two mates who agreed to ‘go halves’ on a big win.
‘Armoured Truck’, the third installment in Lotto New Zealand’s ‘Imagine’ series, follows two drivers as they go about their day dropping off and delivering large amounts of money in their vehicle, dreaming of what they’d do if they won the lottery as they hit the road.
With a flash of Thelma & Louise-style thinking, the companion at the wheel dramatically asks: “What if we just kept driving?”
He puts his foot to the floor and misses his stop as his friend tries to talk him out of the heist. However, it proves to be a trick when the driver pulls out his winning Lotto ticket and reveals to his friend that not only has he won big, he’s going to live up to his promise to split the cash with his buddy.
The spot’s story was inspired by a New Zealander who won NZ$15m on the Lotto, and in honouring a promise made long ago, went halves with his mate.
“The reason the Imagine series has resonated so strongly with Kiwis over the years is because while it presents these fantastical, larger-than-life stories, there’s always a kernel of truth at the heart of it,” said DDB’s chief creative officer, Damon Stapleton. “In this case, that truth is you want to believe that if you win, you’d be the kind of person who would keep the promise you made. Who would be loyal to your mate and share your good fortune. And I think Kiwis truly are like that.”
Emilia Mazur, general manager for corporate communications at Lotto New Zealand, added: “As with the previous Imagine instalments, we wanted to produce a film that inspires Kiwis to dream and I think we’ve achieved that. Even though the setting for this film is smaller – it’s two mates in a small truck – the story feels bigger than that. It really draws you in and takes you along for the ride.”
The TVC will roll out in on TV, online and in cinemas.
