Haitians are taking action after their island nation was one of the areas described as a “shithole” by the president of the United States. In response parody tourism billboards for Washington DC are being crowdfunded to fight this perception.

Last week Donald Trump said he was going to ban immigrants from “shithole countries” from entering the United States – the exact wording of the exclamation is still be debated to this day. The fallout of the statement, among other things spurred AirBnb to champion insulted nations in Africa in addition to Haiti and El Salvador in ads.

The creative, developed by Port Au Prince agency Parkour Creative, exclaims ‘Greetings from Shithole Island’ and will be placed in prime sites across the US capital, assumedly in view of the political elite based in the city. The GoFundMe campaign has currently reached $3,285 of the $40,000 goal in the last five days. For this, the campaign can buy up a billboard near the interstate and another downtown, in addition to some transit ads.

If the fundraiser explodes to $200,000, campaigners will also take out a half page ad in the New York Times.

The campaign page said: “Recently the nation of Haiti has become the subject of headline news. And we couldn’t think of a less shitty time to take this newfound buzz and use it to showcase all the shitty beauty and culture Haiti has to offer.”

Some print ads have been mocked up in anticipation of the campaign reaching its goal. They are below.
