Google Pay will be made available online, in-store, and across Google products, as well as for paying friends. Google Pay is already available on Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse and Instacart.
Pali Bhat, Google's vice president of product management of payments wrote in a blog post: "Today, we’re excited to announce we’ll be bringing together all the different ways to pay with Google, including Android Pay and Google Wallet, into a single brand: Google Pay.
With Google Pay, it’ll be easier for you to use the payment information saved to your Google Account, so you can speed through checkout with peace of mind. Over the coming weeks, you’ll see Google Pay online, in store, and across Google products, as well as when you’re paying friends."
Google Tez faces fierce competition from Paytm, Hike and WhatsApp. The app is tailored to India needs and speaks eight Indian languages (English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu) and works with 55 banks.
According to Statista, total transaction value in the digital payments segment is expected to amount to US$51,756m in 2018.
