A war of words has broken out on US TV screens between rival billionaires Tom Steyer and Donald Trump after the former launched an all-out attack on the president, calling for the Republican to be impeached.

Steyer, a former hedge fund manager who is believed to have a higher net worth than Trump himself, presented and paid for a nationwide advertising campaign in which he made an impassioned plea for lawmakers to begin impeachment proceedings.

Naturally this wasn’t received well on Trump’s Twitter feed which soon retorted, without any hint of irony, that Steyer was ‘wacky and totally unhinged’.

Welcoming Trump’s spirited response Steyer told the Guardian: “I think the fact that he responded so defensively actually drew more attention to what we were trying to do.

“And to that, I say, ‘Thank you.’ If he wants to tweet angrily at us, we would encourage him to do that as much as I can.”

The campaign runs across 50 US states including a targeted spot on Fox & Friends, a popular watch with the president and his supporters, reportedly cost upwards of $10m .

Trump is not short of detractors having seen his Twitter account deactivated by a rogue employee just days ago.
