Ed Sheeran triumphs as LinkedIn teams up with Spotify to lift the lid on the office playlist

Ed Sheeran on track in first LinkedIn/Spotify ‘Desktop of the Pops’

LinkedIn has sounded out a new partnership with music streaming provider Spotify in order to provide a definitive list of the most (and least) acceptable tunes to put on the office playlist.

Ed Sheeran ran away with the vote to place first in LinkedIn’s inaugural ‘Desktop of the Pops’, with 42% of employees happy to press play on the crooner – in stark contrast to rapper Eminem, who was voted least acceptable musician with which to torment the ears of colleagues by 29% of those polled.

Office politics play an important role in the curation of any playlist with 10% of professionals admitting to judging their colleagues based on their musical tastes, so probably best to lay off on the acid house.

Darain Faraz, LinkedIn’s careers expert, said: “We’ve partnered with Spotify to find out what the UK really thinks about music being played at work. Ultimately, how we behave in the workplace plays a huge role in developing our professional brand so it’s important to remember what you want to communicate about yourself to others, whether that’s online or offline. Listening to music can have positive effects on productivity, creativity and motivation levels – just make sure you’ve been considerate and consulted your colleagues before blasting Eminem on a Monday morning!”

The study forms part of Spotify’s efforts to convince bosses to allow staff to turn up the volume amidst findings that 73% of workers believe music makes them more productive, with a further 67% believing a good tune helps keep them motivated and 41% of the belief that a soothing melody can help them remain calm.
