10 Questions with... Adrian Walcott, MD of Brands with Values

This week's 10 Questions are put to Adrian Walcott, on the week of the first anniversary of the BAME 20/20 ambassadors project he is leading to improve representation in the marketing sector.

What was your first ever job?

I ran my own business from the school playground competing against Blockbusters!

What do you do now?

I am co-founder of a training and consultancy business called Brands with Values. Our key point of difference is the ownership of a data driven values model that allows us to help leaders deliver meaningful change in the following areas: Business transformation and Cultural alignment. Diversity & Inclusion and Brand & Employee engagement.

I am also co-founder of BAME 2020, a social enterprise with a clear aim to be a catalyst to attract,retain and grow young BAME talent and work towards a proportional representation within the workforce of the Marketing, Media and Communications sectors in order that 20% of our senior marketing talent comes from a BAME background

Why did you get into marketing?

I enjoyed the dynamic, fast pace of marketing within a global advertising agency – a brilliant 1st job for a young grad. And the great feeling you have when unearthing an insight.

Who do you find most interesting to follow on social media?

A year a ago I was recommend by a dear friend and colleague in the industry to follow Jim Carroll’s Blog and haven’t looked back.

What was the last book you read?

Even though "The Magic of thinking Big by David Schwartz" was given to me by my dad when I was seven years old, I do find myself dusting it off again and again to this day!

If you could ban one buzzword or piece of jargon what would it be?

LOL / With all due respect/

If you could take one person in the world for a drink to talk about their thoughts and their career who would you choose and why?

As one of the most celebrated sportsman, Muhammed Ali to hear about his perservance and self-belief

Do you ever turn your phone off?

Only before take off and landing.

What's the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Fire yourself from your job each day and start the following day as your successor.
