Facebook has revealed it will launch a dedicated video creation app as it looks to appeal to its creator community and step up competition to YouTube.

The new app will launch later this year and, similar to Facebook Mentions, will only be available to verified accounts, which include the likes of journalists, celebrities and significant online influencers.

Facebook's product director Daniel Danker gave details on the new app at the "Future of Facebook Video" panel at VidCon last week.

"It has never been a better time to be a creator on Facebook," Danker said. "With Facebook we can connect and create community with your audience and tell stories that are social, personal, and authentic."

The video creation app will work with Facebook Live and features a new "creative kit" that gives users access to special tools allowing them to add intros and outros to live videos, use custom stickers and frames and more.

It will also have a new Community tab, where creators can more easily connect with their followers on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. Other features include greater insights, such as who the creator's followers are and how they are consuming the creator's videos.
